Take a few moments to review the information presented here to help you select the right cupola. Cupolas and weathervanes make great-looking additions to homes and other buildings. Cupolas can be used for ventilation or can just be a decorative accent. Most of our cupolas are purchased as decorative accents but can be functional as a vent.

Due to the different cupola designs that we offer and based on our experience, when selecting the right size cupola for your building, please consider the following rule of thumb:

Country Cupolas

When considering purchasing a Country Cupola, a good rule of thumb is "for every 1" of unbroken roofline = at least 1 1/4" of cupola roofline". For example, if a roof ridgeline measures 20", the minimum size Country Cupola would be 26" roof. See the chart below to help you determine the right size cupola:

Colonial or Vinyl Cupolas

When considering purchasing one of our Colonial Cupola or a Vinyl Maintenance Free Cupola, a good rule of thumb is the traditional way, "for every 1" of unbroken ridge line = at least 1" for the cupola base". It is always better to go one size larger than smaller in order to be more proportionate to the building. For example, if a roof ridge measures 24" long, the minimum size cupola base would be 24". You can go to a 28" but usually no smaller than a 24".

If you are still unsure as to the size of the cupola, a quick and easy way to visualize what is best for you is to position a cardboard box of similar size to the recommended cupola on your roof and then view it from the ground. We suggest walking around the building and viewing it from various angles. Please be sure to make an adjustment to the box to compensate for the roof pitch since the cupola will sit lower than the ridgeline. Example: if your roof pitch is 8 over 12, your cupola will sit on the ridge 8" lower than the cupola measurements given.

All of our cupolas are "weathervane ready". They do not require a roof mount or any additional hardware. You will only need a hand saw and a screwdriver. Complete, easy step-by-step instructions are included.

Our cupolas are designed for a roof pitch up to 10" rise per foot - most roofs are not steeper than this. If, however, your roof's pitch is steeper than 10" rise per foot, you will have to include a base extension with your order.
